Jordan is the leading destination for medical tourism in the Middle East.

While the number of foreign patients visiting the Kingdom for treatment might have fallen by 40% over 2016 and 2017, due to stricter visa rules for some nationalities, Jordanian specialists are still in high demand.

But international patients do not jet off to Jordan just for hospital treatment; they, just like Jordanians, also like to benefit from the healing powers of the Dead Sea and natural hot springs.

If you’re seeking a more “natural” medical treatment in Jordan, these are some of your options:

Afra Hot Springs

Located 26 km north of the city of Tafilah, the less-known Afra Hot Springs are less known than Ma’in. The hot mineral water flows from 15 different water springs, ranging in temperature from 45° to 48° C. These mineral-rich waters help in the treatment of infertility, arteriosclerosis, anemia, rheumatism and many other chronic diseases.

Located 74 km south of Amman and 264 meters (866 feet) below sea level, the thermal mineral hot springs and waterfalls of Ma’in are visited by thousands of people every year, who bathe in its medicinal waters for the treatment of chronic rheumatism, muscle spasms, back pain, vascular disease, varicose veins, skin diseases, neurological and psychological disorders, chronic sinus infections and other illnesses.

The Sulphur-rich springs are heated to temperatures of up to 63° C by underground lava fissures.

The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth (it is over 400m (1,312 feet) below sea level). The super salty water of the Dead Sea is rich in chloride salts of magnesium, sodium, potassium, bromine and several others. The “beaches” of the Dead Sea are also famous for their mud, which has high concentrations of salts and minerals. Both the salty water and the mud are used to treat skin disorders, prevent hair loss, reduce the appearance of cellulite and treating rheumatic conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
