The Shanghai Municipal Health Commission has claimed that the first patient since the beginning of the deadly coronavirus has been cured and discharged from hospital, the Maan News reported. 

The 56-year-old woman felt flu-like symptoms on January 10 before being admitted to hospital on Jan12.

The patient, who is a resident of Wuhan–the city where the Coronavirus originated–for several years, had normal body temperature for six days, and her respiratory symptoms improved significantly.

After nearly two weeks under medical care, she has now been released and cured from the disease.

The patient was reportedly released from quarantine after further examinations to prevent the spread of infections.

The number of confirmed deaths from a viral outbreak in China has risen to 54, with authorities in hard-hit Hubei province on Sunday reporting 13 more fatalities and 323 new cases.

The virus causing illness in Wuhan is a novel coronavirus – that is to say, a member of the coronavirus family that has never been encountered before.

Like other coronaviruses, it has come from animals. Many of those infected either worked or frequently shopped in the Huanan seafood wholesale market in the center of the Chinese city, which also sold live and newly slaughtered animals. New and troubling viruses usually originate in animal hosts. Ebola and flu are examples.
