The majority of people in South Korea under the age of 50 recovered from coronavirus without receiving oxygen therapy, according to a study conducted by the Korean National Medical Centre on Monday.

The study was carried out on 3,060 COVID-19 patients who have been treated in 55 hospitals across South Korea between January 20 - when the first case was reported in the country - and May 31.

The study indicated that only 1.2% of patients under the age of 50 required oxygen therapy 14 days after showing symptoms.

In contrast, 17.3% of patients above the age of 50 needed oxygen therapy to get treated.

After 28 days of showing symptoms, only 1.5% of patients aged under 50 required oxygen therapy, in contrast, 13.2% of patients aged 50 or more needed oxygen therapy.

The mortality rate among those under 50 was zero on the 28th day of showing symptoms, but the figures were 0.5% for patients in their fifties, and for those in their sixties, seventies, eighties or more, it rose to 0.9%, 5.8%, and 14%, respectively.

The study was published in the latest edition of the Journal of Korean Medical Science issued by the Korean Academy of Medical Sciences.
