Jordan has joined a few countries, including Oman and China, in blocking Clubhouse, an invitation-only audio-chat iPhone application launched in April 2020. By using Clubhouse, users can listen in to conversations, interviews and discussions between people on various topics.

Thursday, citizens in Jordan took to social media to express their frustration following the ban of the application.

Jordanian journalist Basil Alrafaih wrote on Facebook “An authority that is afraid to speak, and oppresses its people on the ground and in space, cannot confront a pandemic.”

Facebook users explained how it feels unfair that they are silenced, while decision makers continue to speak their minds.

Another Facebook user wrote “How about they [government] also block Facebook, Instagram and Twitter and bring us back to the Stone Age?”

In turn, many people on social media said that they will download a VPN to use the application.

Clubhouse is currently only available on iOS. However, Clubhouse co-founder Paul Davison said Tuesday that the application will be available on Android in a couple of months.
