Monday, the medical team at Makassed Islamic Charitable Society, affiliated with the Zakat Fund, managed to perform a rare operation to remove large meningeal marrows from the head of a five-day-old newborn.

The Director General of the hospital Ali Al-Saad said the operation was carried out for a newborn girl with several congenital anomalies, during which a blockage in the opening between the ventricles of the brain was treated, and three large meningeal medullaes with sizes ranging between 10-15 cm were removed.

He explained that the surgical team faced some difficulties during surgery including low fetal blood pressure, tachycardia and slowing of the heart rate, and the decrease in oxygen pressure. However, he confirmed that the four-hour operation was successful.

He noted that the patient was placed on breathing support and transferred to the premature infants department for 24 hours, stressing that she is now in stable health condition.

The medical team was headed by a consultant brain and neurosurgeon Mohammad Na'im Farhoud and included a consultant anesthetist Shaher Shatnawi, anesthesia technicians Amira Al-Hassanat and Malik Malkawi, and operation nurses Hamid Dandoun and Ammar Jaradat.

Additionally, she was supervised by Abdel Latif Shammout in the premature infants department and the head of the department is Samar Heikal.
