To encourage young people to get their first dose of coronavirus vaccines, Greece is offering its young citizens 150 euros ($180) and a month's free internet package for their mobile phones, in a government drive to increase the vaccination rate.

Greece is currently easing restrictions to combat the pandemic, but there are increasing fears of the spread of the most contagious "delta" strain.

"With the first dose of the vaccine they will receive a prepaid card of 150 euros. It is a debt for young people. A gift of gratitude to them," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said at a ministerial meeting.

Government data indicates that about a third of the population of 11 million people have received full doses of protection from the virus.

The government said that about 940,000 Greeks between the ages of 18 and 25 would be eligible for the financial rewards if they received the first dose of the vaccine until the end of the year.

Greece has recorded a total of 421,266 cases of coronavirus, and 12,682 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.
