Tuesday, Airbnb announced that it will house 20,000 Afghan refugees globally for free, said Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky in a tweet.

“Starting today, Airbnb will begin housing 20,000 Afghan refugees globally for free,” Chesky wrote on Twitter.

“The displacement and resettlement of Afghan refugees in the US and elsewhere is one of the biggest humanitarian crises of our time. We feel a responsibility to step up,” he added.

According to Chesky, the company will be paying for the stays.

He added the generosity of the hosts has helped in making it happen.

The company said the cost of the stays would be funded through contributions from Airbnb and Chesky, in addition to donors to the Airbnb.org Refugee Fund.

Chensky called on other businesses to help with the crisis, saying “there’s no time to waste.”

Airbnb is working with community partners, NGOs and other organizations to “support the most pressing needs,” Chensky lastly added.
