World Health Organization declared highest alert over monkeypox on Saturday as the outbreak was classified a global health emergency.

This came after the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was scheduled to announce if the organization should launch the highest level of readiness, to combat the spread of monkeypox.

Over 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries, according to Ghebreyesus.

Notably, the only two other health emergencies in the world at the moment are COVID-19 and the continuing effort to eradicate polio.
