Psychologist Basil Al-Hamad said that the reasons that push a person to commit suicide are many, but the main reason is depression.

Hamad told Roya Thursday that a depressed person may be dominated by suicidal thoughts and that the majority of those who commit suicide had thoughts about ending their lives at least once before committing it.

A total of 593 people in Jordan attempted to commit suicide in 2021, according to the latest reports.

Last year, a total of 167 people in Jordan committed suicide, according to the National Institute of Forensic Medicine.

Director of the institute Raed Al-Momani said that among those who committed suicide were 23 individuals aged between 12-17, of which 13 were females and 10 were males, according to Al-Ghad newspaper.

Out of the 167 people who ended their lives last year, 42 were females and 125 were males.

In April 2022, the House of Representatives approved a number of amendments to the draft law amending the Penal Code.

One of the amendments that the MPs approved, was imprisoning those who attempt to commit suicide in a public place for a period not exceeding six months and a fine of no more than JD 100, or one of these two penalties. The penalty will be doubled if it was a ‘mass suicide.’

Mass suicide occurs when a group of people simultaneously kill themselves.
