The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge said, "We believe we can eliminate sustained human-to-human transmission of monkeypox in the region if we commit to doing so and put the needed resources towards that end."

He said, "There are encouraging early signs, as evidenced in France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, the UK, and other countries, that the outbreak may be slowing. To move towards elimination in our region, we need to urgently step up our efforts. Yet we believe we can eliminate sustained human-to-human transmission of monkeypox in the region if we commit to doing so and put the needed resources towards that end."

"We need to strike while the iron is hot, and that's why we have issued these two policy briefs with a very clear policy objective which is elimination in the European region. We need to build on the momentum, we need to really take advantage of the fact that this is still high on the agenda and we need to act quickly in order to really sustain the early successes that we are seeing."
