French President Emmanuel Macron called his country's alliance with the United States "stronger than anything," as he wrapped up day one of a state visit clouded by trade tensions.

In a speech to the French community, delivered hours after he blasted "aggressive" US industrial subsidies, Macron called for both countries to heed "the bonds that history has forged between us, an alliance stronger than anything."
