Several Virtual Private Network applications (VPN) rose to the top ranking apps downloaded in Jordan since TikTok was suspended by the authorities in December 2022.

Many resorted to VPNs to encrypt their internet traffic and disguise their online identity almost immediately after TikTok was suspended due to the spread of videos aimed at spreading false news and acts of violence, according to a statement from Jordanian authorities.

While the app is banned in several countries, such as India and Afghanistan, this is the first time Jordanians witnessed a banning of such sort. However, official sources told Roya that the authorities are currently negotiating legal and technical aspects before reinstating the app in Jordan.

One social media user commented on TikTok being banned saying, “The majority of the people who use TikTok here are still scrolling by VPN.”

Another agreed, writing, “Actually We have VPN I can't live without it.”

TikTok users also appeared to be helping each other when one user pleaded, “My vpn isnt working pls send help,” and was immediately met with a number of VPN applications available for use.

Notably, Jordan’s Cybercrime Unit had announced on Dec. 16, 2022 that TikTok was temporarily suspended in Jordan after users reported the application crashing.
