A male humpback whale washed up on the shore of Long Island early Monday morning, as reported by AFP.

Members of the Northwest Atlantic Marine Alliance performed a necropsy on the carcass of a humpback whale at Lido Beach in Long Island in New York.

Science teacher at Science Museum of Long Island Helene Bartsch, who was present at the scene, said "I came to see it because I haven't seen...I saw a dead whale once but not for a really long time. I'm just a big whale lover and I wanted to see it for myself rather than just the news."

She contiued saying "Rather than just saying 'Oh, a whale washed up', it's like yeah, but why? How can we stop this from happening? So I think keeping that conversation going and changing some rules with our government to try to enact more change to keep the whales safe."
