Friday, the Syrian government agreed to deliver humanitarian aid to opposition-controlled areas in the north of the country five days after the devastating earthquake that killed over 22,000 in Syria and Turkey.

According to the official Syrian News Agency (SANA), the Council of Ministers announced that the distribution of aid will be under the supervision of the International Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, with the assistance of United Nations organizations, which ensures that it reaches those in need.

The United Nations usually transfers humanitarian aid designated for northwestern Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey, or from inside Syria (government-controlled areas). However, no aid has been sent from inside Syria to the northwest of the country for about three weeks.

In the northwest of the country, the delay in the arrival of aid is angering local organizations, residents and rescuers.

The first United Nations aid convoy entered Thursday to the northwest of the country consisting of only six trucks, followed by a second convoy on Friday consisting of 14 trucks.

The two convoys included humanitarian equipment, tents, and blankets, but no foodstuffs and other items necessary for search and rescue operations were there.
