Thursday, the Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) announced that it has a plan to limit food poisoning after 120 cases were confirmed in Jerash and another 50 in Mafraq over the past two days.

The Director General of the JFDA Nizar Muhaidat reassured citizens and residents that they are monitoring and inspecting food establishments around the clock to ensure food safety.

Muhaidat told Roya that samples were taken from several shawerma restaurants to make sure meals are up to health and safety standards.

According to the JFDA, samples from restaurants that resulted in food poisoning cases contained two types of bacteria: Campylobacter and Salmonella.

Muhaidat noted that not all cases that were hospitalized were due to food poisoning.

He explained that restaurants and food establishments are classified into different categories based on "degree of danger," adding that fast food restaurants go under the high-risk category.

This year, the JFDA conducted eight field visits to one of the establishments that resulted in the recent food poisoning cases.

Any food establishment that causes food poisoning is transferred to the judiciary, he said.
