A woman dies every two minutes due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

Thursday, the WHO released a reported entitled "Trends in maternal mortality 2000 to 2020," providing insight though estimates in cooperation with UNICEF, UNFPA, World Bank Group and UNDESA/Population Division.

According to the report, approximately 800 women died from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth every day in 2020.

Earlier during the 20-year period, there was progress that has since stalled in many regions.

However, in recent years, maternal mortality rates have significantly increased in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and North America, but most deaths are still concentrated in poor countries and warzones.

An estimated 287,000 maternal deaths were recorded around the world in 2020, which is a decrease from 2016's 309,000 deaths and the 446,000 deaths reported in 2000, the WHO revealed.

According to the WHO, the most common complications that account for nearly 75 percent of maternal deaths are"

• severe bleeding 
• infections 
• high blood pressure during pregnancy
• complications from delivery
• unsafe abortion

The WHO mentioned in the overview that the "Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.1 is to reduce maternal mortality to less than 70 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births by 2030."
