Volunteer Mohammed Alaa al-Jalil tends to cats rescued from the rubble of destroyed buildings in Jandairis in Aleppo. Every day, Jalil travels some 100 kilometers to Jandairis, among the towns worst affected by the recent deadly earthquake in Syria, in search of kittens and puppies to rescue.

Jalil said "Many cats were injured in the earthquake and their families escaped or died. I take them to the shelter as some of them have been injured or lost their families and are living without shelter or food."

"We took more than 33 cats, including eight which have been injured, over the past 10 days. We don't find many anymore but we will continue to help injured cats after we finish helping people. We will dedicate as much time as possible to help these animals," he added.

He continued saying, "There are difficulties we face since cats would be scared and so they scratch us out of fear after what they've been through. We have difficulties catching them. We sometimes visit the place over several days and place food and water in an attempt to catch them."

Veterinarian Ammar Hammami said "My main mission is to treat domestic animals in the shelter. Due to the damage in Jandairis as a result of the earthquake, a team headed there and saved cats and dogs. There are dogs that died and others that we brought to the shelter. As for cats, the injuries vary from eyes to nerves to bones. We provide as much treatment as possible in this clinic."
