Friday, Iran and Saudi Arabia announced that they will be renewing ties in two months.

The unexpected announcement came after the two countries held talks over a four-day period in China.

A joint tripartite statement was released by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the People’s Republic of China to announce the agreement reached between the two countries.

According to the BBC, previous attempts at reconciliation were not successful but Friday both countries said they would reopen their embassies within two months.

They also agreed to re-establish trade and security ties.

United Nations (UN) chief Antonio Guterres thanked China for cooperating and contributing to reaching this agreement.

The UN secretary-general welcomed the statement, expressed appreciation to China for hosting the talks and commended efforts by other countries in this regard.

The Secretary-General also reiterated his readiness to use his good offices to further advance regional dialogue to ensure durable peace and security in the Gulf region.
