The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk calls on sporting federations like FIFA "to have strategies in place to prevent and counter racism", following the abuse suffered by Real Madrid's forward Vinicius Junior in Valencia on May 21.

"The racial abuse faced, once again, by Real Madrid football player Vinicius Junior in Spain just this past Sunday is a stark reminder of the prevalence of racism in sport. I call on those who organize sporting events to have strategies in place to prevent and counter racism. Much more indeed needs to be done to eradicate racial discrimination."

He continued saying: "We need to have a hard look at human rights and sports, from a wide range of perspectives."

"Sport is also... it brings people together. There are so many positive things that are ingrained in sport events but we also need to deal with the shadow side as well, and that is why we want to put forward a number of clear ideas of human rights standards in sport events," he said.
