The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Petra Development Tourism Regional Authority Suleiman Al-Farajat stated that the archaeological site of Petra is expected to achieve record-breaking visitor numbers in 2023.

Farajat told Roya that approximately 910,000 tourists have visited Petra up until Sunday, surpassing figures recorded during the same period in 2022.

He noted that it is expected that the one-millionth visitor will enter Petra sometime next month, potentially setting a new record for the number of tourists by the end of the year.

The figure is expected to reach 1.4 million visitors by the end of 2023.

Farajat affirmed that there is a plan, in collaboration with the local community, to increase the site's capacity by introducing visitors through another entrance.

He noted that including site exploration as part of the entrance ticket may encourage higher visitor numbers.

Farajat also mentioned a plan to tender projects for public facilities and transportation, which will involve employing local residents to create new job opportunities.
