The ongoing Houthi attacks against ships associated with the Israeli Occupation in the Red Sea have raised concerns among global shipping companies that transit through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, considered one of the most important globally for trade. Some companies have altered the routes of their ships, leading to partial disruption of global trade and an increase in maritime shipping costs.

In response, the European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, stated that member states of the bloc are considering launching a mission in the Red Sea by mid-February - to protect the ships from Houthis attacks.

Borrell told reporters before a meeting of European Union defense ministers that "not all member states may be willing to participate, but that will not hinder the process. I hope the mission can be launched on Feb. 17.”

The leading country for the mission will be chosen on Wednesday, as well as determining its headquarters and other details.

Borrell added that the European Union's operation will be called "Aspides," meaning "The Guardian," or “protector” and its mandate will involve protecting trade and intercepting attacks, but it will not participate in launching strikes against the Houthis.

Diplomats have indicated that France, Greece, and Italy have expressed interest in leading the mission, while seven countries have so far indicated their readiness to send naval assets.

The initial phase of the operation will involve three ships under the command of the European Union. Diplomats clarified that France and Italy already have warships in the region, and Germany plans to send the frigate named "Hessen" to the area.
