United States forces carried out a self-defense airstrike on two explosive-laden drones belonging to the Houthis, Reuters reported early Tuesday, citing the US Central Command. 

Meanwhile, a British maritime authority stated that it received a report of an incident 57 nautical miles west of Al Hudaydah in Yemen.

US President Joe Biden, in a message to Congress, stated that strikes against the Houthis are in accordance with international law and the United States' right to self-defense.

Biden added that the Houthis pose a threat to US forces and navigation in the Red Sea.

Earlier, Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder stated that the unlawful actions carried out by the Houthis destabilize the region.

Ryder said in a press conference Monday evening that US forces, along with allies, targeted 36 Houthi sites including weapon depots and air defense systems.

He added that the strikes aim to weaken the Houthis' ability to attack ships and disrupt navigation in the Red Sea.

He pointed out that the United States is aware that Iran provides funding, equipment, and training to groups attacking US forces.

The Pentagon spokesperson emphasized that there may be human casualties in US strikes in Iraq and Syria, but the assessment is ongoing.

He reiterated that if the Houthis continue their attacks on ships in the Red Sea, Washington will continue to strike their positions to weaken their capabilities.
