Major Engineer Mohammed Al-Aqabawi from the Jordan Traffic Institute reported that there were 170 injuries due to running red lights, including 102 minor injuries, 62 moderate injuries, and two fatalities during the year.

Al-Aqabawi pointed out the danger of running red lights, stating that 40 percent of road accidents worldwide occur at intersections.

He added, in his interview with Radio Amen FM, that the primary aim of traffic signals is to mitigate traffic conflicts and ensure optimal traffic flow.

- Stringent penalties - 

A revised law for traffic regulations in 2023 has strengthened penalties for violations that endanger road users. Penalties of imprisonment and fines have been increased for offenses such as running red lights, reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving without authorization or with an expired license, driving a public vehicle without the appropriate license category, driving at excessive speeds, using a phone while driving, and other violations.

Violators face imprisonment for one to two months or a fine ranging from JD 200 to JD 300, or both, if caught driving without brakes or with faulty brakes, without front or rear license plates, driving recklessly or showing off on the road, or running a red light.

Additionally, fines ranging from JD 50 to JD 100 are imposed for violations such as suddenly changing lanes, taking the wrong lane, driving in the opposite direction, disregarding prohibited signs, driving in convoys that obstruct traffic flow, or having passengers' bodies protruding from the vehicle.

A fine of JD 50 is imposed on drivers who use a handheld phone while driving.

Furthermore, a fine of JD 20 is imposed on anyone who stops their vehicle at accident sites without justification.
