Two sisters were run over by a drunk driver on the Zarqa-Mafraq road in a hit-and-run incident - a security source has said.

The source stated that the injured sisters were rushed to Zarqa Government Hospital by Civil Defense teams, where it was found that the condition of the first sister was critical and the second was moderate.

Immediately, security forces initiated an investigation. In record time, the driver was apprehended in the Jabal Tareq area of Zarqa. It was revealed that he was not in the right state of mind due to alcohol consumption.

According to the amended Traffic Law of 2023, driving under the influence of alcohol above the legally permitted limit is punishable by imprisonment for no less than one month and no more than three months, or a fine ranging from 250 to 500 dinars, or both penalties.

Additionally, the driver's license is suspended for two months if caught driving under the influence of drugs or psychotropic substances.

The Public Security Directorate (PSD) emphasized on its socials that driving under the influence of drugs or psychotropic substances is a deadly behavior that increases the likelihood of fatal accidents by 17 times - It constitutes a serious violation where the driver loses concentration and ability to respond to road factors before losing their commitment and humanity.
