Activists in Brazil are calling for the removal of the statue honoring former player for the Brazil national football team and Barcelona, Dani Alves, after he was sentenced to prison for involvement in a rape case in Spain.

Speaking to the Spanish newspaper "Marca," activist Manuela Tyler Medrado emphasized that the presence of Alves' statue in his hometown of Juazeiro contradicts the values and respect for women, emphasizing the need to foster a society that rejects a culture of sexual violence.

The local government is facing mounting pressure to act on the decision to take down the statue, particularly after it was targeted in vandalism incidents.

Alves was sentenced to four years and six months in prison for sexually assaulting a woman at a nightclub in December 2022.

He served 14 months of his sentence before being released on bail of one million euros while awaiting the outcome of his appeals.

Additional measures included surrendering his passports, a travel ban, and weekly court appearances.
