Following Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian’s helicopter crash and death on Monday, May 20, world leaders and international communities were quick to pay their condolences to Iran.

In the Middle East, Lebanon commenced three days of mourning. Hezbollah specifically mourned Raisi, stating that the group knew Raisi "closely for a long time" and that he was "a strong supporter, and a staunch defender of our causes... and a protector of the resistance movements."

In a statement posted by the Quds News Network on X, Hamas extended their condolences to Iran, stating, "We express our shared feelings of grief and sorrow with the brotherly Iranian people and our full solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran in this painful incident that claimed the lives of some of the finest Iranian leaders who had a distinguished career in the renaissance of Iran and honorable positions in supporting our Palestinian cause, backing our people's legitimate struggle.”

Additionally, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas stated, "The loss is tragic, and the State of Palestine, its people, and leadership express solidarity with the Iranian people on the passing of the President and Foreign Minister."

Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad expressed solidarity with Iran during these trying times, stating that Syria worked with Raisi “to ensure that strategic relations between Syria and Iran flourish always.”

In Yemen, the head of the Houthi’s Supreme Revolutionary Committee, Mohammed Ali Al-Houthi, voiced his “deepest condolences” to Iran and the families affected by the helicopter crash.

In a post on X, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry extended “his sincere condolences and sympathy to the government and people of the sisterly Islamic Republic of Iran on the death of His Excellency President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian in a horrific plane accident... May God bless the deceased and their companions with His mercy, and grant patience and solace to their families and the brotherly Iranian people.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani stated, “We express our solidarity with the brotherly Iranian people and the officials of the Islamic Republic during this painful tragedy.”

Although the Gulf countries and Iran have had previous friction, Iran has slowly mended ties with the region.

Emirati President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan posted on X stating, “I extend my deepest condolences to the Iranian government and people over the passing of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and those accompanying them following a tragic accident. We pray that God grants them eternal rest and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to their families. The UAE stands in solidarity with Iran at this difficult time.”

Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, also expressed his sympathies for Iran on X, stating, “Sincere condolences to the government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdullahian, and the accompanying officials in the painful helicopter accident.”

Additionally, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan posted on X, “I pray for God's mercy on my dear colleague, my brother, and the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Ibrahim Reisi, who we learned, unfortunately, passed away in a helicopter crash… As Türkiye, we will stand by our neighbor Iran in these difficult and sad times, as we have done many times.”

As for Pakistan, the country announced a national day of mourning, with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif posting on X, “I along with the government and people of Pakistan extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Iranian nation on this terrible loss. May the martyred souls rest in heavenly peace. The great Iranian nation will overcome this tragedy with customary courage.”

According to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Xi Jinping described Raisi’s "tragic death" as "a great loss to the Iranian people," adding that "the Chinese people have lost a good friend."

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on X, “Deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise of Dr. Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His contribution to strengthening India-Iran bilateral relationship will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the people of Iran. India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin published a statement reading, “Sayyid Ebrahim Raisi was an outstanding politician whose whole life was devoted to serving [his] country… As a true friend of Russia, he made an invaluable personal contribution to the development of good-neighborly relations between our countries, and made great efforts to bring them to the level of strategic partnership.”

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim posted on X, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and several other officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran. My heartfelt condolences go out to the people of Iran during this profoundly difficult time.”

Additionally, the EU published a statement offering its condolences “for the death of President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian and other Iranian officials involved in the tragic helicopter crash on Sunday. The EU expresses its sympathies to the families of all the victims and to the Iranian citizens affected.”
