Syrian First Lady diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

The Syrian presidency said today that Asma al-Assad, the wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), following a comprehensive series of medical tests after several symptoms and clinical signs showed.

“The First Lady will temporarily withdraw from all direct engagements as part of her treatment plan,” the statement said, adding that she will “adhere to a specialized treatment protocol that includes stringent infection preventive measures and appropriate social distancing.”

The announcement comes almost five years after she had said she fully recovered from Breast Cancer.
