Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico remains in a "serious but stable" condition following an assassination attempt in which he was shot four times.

Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak reported Fico's status a week after the incident in Handlova, where Fico was greeting supporters.

Fico underwent two lengthy surgeries in Banska Bystrica and remains hospitalized there. The hospital confirmed his stable condition on social media.

The suspected gunman, 71-year-old poet Juraj Cintula, has been charged with premeditated attempted murder and is in custody.

Investigations suggest Cintula may have had accomplices, and there are concerns about the deletion of his Facebook account post-arrest, with Meta claiming responsibility.

Fico, 59, who assumed office in October, has emphasized halting military aid to Ukraine and seeking peace with Russia, amid Slovakia's deeply polarized political landscape.
