The Jordanian Astronomical Society has revealed the expected date for Eid al-Adha for the year 2024.

Dr. Ammar Al-Sukji, the society's president, said in a statement received by "Roya" on Monday that Sunday, June 16, 2024, is expected to be the day of Eid al-Adha in Jordan and some other Arab countries.

According to Al-Sukji, astronomical calculations indicate that the central conjunction or the birth of the crescent moon will occur on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at exactly 3:39 PM Jordan time.

At sunset, the moon's age will be 4 hours and 1 minute, and it will remain above the horizon for about 19 minutes after sunset, with an approximate altitude of two and a half degrees. The angle between the moon and the sun will be approximately 4 degrees and 19 minutes, with a moon illumination percentage of 0.1 percent, and an azimuth angle of 300 degrees.

Al-Sukji confirmed that the sighting of the moon for the Hijri month of Dhu al-Hijjah is not possible in Jordan and Arab countries on Thursday evening, according to the databases recorded in the Islamic Crescents Observation Project (ICOP). Therefore, the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah is expected to be Saturday, June 8, 2024.

Calendars that rely on central conjunction and the moon's setting after sunset, such as the Umm al-Qura calendar, indicate that the first day of Dhu al-Hijjah will be Friday, June 7, 2024.

Therefore, the date of Eid al-Adha will be Sunday, June 16, 2024, according to calendars that follow astronomical calculations for the birth and setting of the crescent moon after sunset, such as the Umm al-Qura calendar, while calendars that rely on the criteria of observational sighting probabilities will mark Eid al-Adha on Monday, June 17, 2024.
