Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad registered today as a possible candidate for the upcoming presidential election set to take place on June 28. He previously attempted to run in the 2021 elections but was barred by Iranian authorities.

Ahmadinejad’s registration puts pressure on the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei; as he openly challenged Khameni in his former presidential stint from 2005 to 2013.

After his registration, he vowed to look for “constructive engagement” between Iran and the rest of the world and improve economic relations with all nations.

“The economic, political, cultural and security problems are beyond the situation in 2013,” Ahmadinejad said, referring to the year he left the presidency after two terms which spanned from 2005 to 2013.
