President Joe Biden addressed his poor performance in Thursday's debate, attributing it to the exhaustion from his recent international travels.
Speaking at a fundraiser in McLean, Virginia, Biden admitted that it "wasn't very smart" to embark on back-to-back trips to Europe before the debate against Republican nominee Donald Trump.
"I decided to travel around the world a couple of times shortly before the debate. I didn’t listen to my staff and almost fell asleep on stage," the president said. He added, "It's not an excuse but an explanation."
Biden's comments came after a series of events, including meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron for the 80th anniversary of D-Day and attending the G7 summit in Italy. Despite a week at Camp David for debate preparation, his schedule was so packed that his advisors cut the prep short by two days to allow a brief beach trip.
During his time at Camp David, debate prep sessions did not start before 11 AM, and Biden was allotted time each afternoon for a nap.
