Millions of voters across the UK head to the polls for the general election on Thursday, with a total of 650 parliamentary constituencies competing.

Approximately 40,000 polling stations have been set up across the UK to accommodate the 46 million eligible voters.

A party must secure at least 326 seats to achieve an outright majority, which would allow them to govern without relying on coalition support from smaller parties.

Traditionally, UK elections are held every four to five years, with the latest possible date for this contest being January 2025. However, the decision to hold the election earlier was made by the prime minister.
