UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced that the United Kingdom will resume funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to expedite aid to those in need in Gaza.

In a statement to the House of Commons, Lammy emphasized that supporting aid efforts in Gaza is a moral imperative amid the ongoing crisis. He reiterated calls for an immediate ceasefire to secure release of captives and alleviate suffering in Gaza.

Lammy highlighted UNRWA's crucial role in delivering aid, noting that no other organization can match its capacity to provide the necessary support.

UK will contribute GBP 6 million to the Gaza Flash Appeal, assisting UNRWA's efforts to address the urgent needs of over 3 million people in Gaza and the West Bank. Additionally, GBP 15 million will be allocated to UNRWA's program budget to support basic services in the occupied Palestinian territories and beyond.

Last week, the UK joined over 117 countries, including the US, Germany, Jordan, Kuwait, and Slovenia, in a joint statement reaffirming support for UNRWA and acknowledging its essential role in providing life-saving aid to Palestinian refugees.

The suspension of UK funding was previously linked to allegations involving UNRWA employees in the October 7 attacks. However, the UK has now aligned its stance with partners such as Germany, the EU, Sweden, Japan, France, and other donors.
