Eleven people died and more than 30 were reported missing after a bridge collapsed in northern China on Saturday due to heavy rain and flash floods in Shangluo, Shaanxi Province, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.
Rescue operations continued Saturday morning in Shangluo, located approximately 900 kilometers southwest of Beijing.
Since Tuesday, large areas of northern and central China have experienced heavy rainfall, leading to severe flooding and significant property damage. In Shaanxi Province, heavy rains caused five deaths and left eight people missing in Baoji, a city with a population of around 3.2 million, as reported by Xinhua News Agency on Friday.
China has faced extreme weather conditions this summer, with record-high temperatures in some northern regions and heavy rains and floods in the south. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events to climate change, exacerbated by greenhouse gas emissions.
In May, 48 people died when a highway collapsed in southern China following heavy rainfall.
