School book fraud: Government employee sentenced five years for theft, forgery

The “Third Anti-Corruption Criminal Court” at the Amman Court of First Instance has convicted a warehouse manager responsible for secondary school books at a government school for manipulating book quantities and falsifying documents related to book transfers to a private school.

The court sentenced the defendant for embezzlement through forgery and neglect of official duties. The verdict includes five years of hard labor, three months of imprisonment, and restitution of JD 29,761.5

The court established that the defendant, who was a warehouse manager for secondary school books, manipulated the number of books and falsified documents related to the transfer of books to a private school. He also altered the master copies of documents to match the discrepancies in the book quantities.

Through these actions, the defendant embezzled books valued at JD 13,962.5

The court also found that after the defendant was transferred from his warehouse position to the Directorate of Education, an inventory revealed a shortage of JD 15,999 

The court consolidated the penalties, resulting in a total sentence of five years of hard labor, five months of imprisonment, and a fine of JD 14,712.5 – the defendant was also ordered to repay the full amount of JOD 29,761.5 for the embezzled books.
