Some citizens in Jordan received emergency alert messages labeled as "Critical" or "Emergency" on their phones on Wednesday afternoon.

Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) revealed that these messages were part of a test conducted by a tech company to trial an early warning system.

However, due to a technical glitch, the messages were mistakenly sent to several citizens' phones.

TRC has instructed the company responsible to issue apology messages to all affected users. The early warning system being tested is designed to alert the public about accidents, natural disasters, and other emergencies.

Similar systems are already in place in many countries worldwide, and this system is expected to be implemented across other networks in Jordan.

Earlier Wednesday, a source from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) revealed the reasons behind the emergency message received by some smart devices in Jordan on Wednesday.

In a statement to Roya, the source explained that one of the telecom companies in Jordan is conducting a test by sending warning messages to citizens' phones.

This test aims to eventually implement it as a method of alerting in case of disasters, the source added.
