Hamas implicitly rejects latest ceasefire proposal; says Netanyahu scuttling talks

Hamas released a statement today after the latest round of Gaza ceasefire negotiations in the Qatari capital Doha concluded.

Hamas said the movement accepted the mediators' previous proposal on May 6, 2024 in addition to the one put forward on July 2, 2024.

“Following the issuance of the tripartite statement, Hamas requested that the mediators present a plan to implement what had been proposed and agreed upon, to avoid endless negotiations due to Netanyahu's stalling and his addition of more conditions and obstacles to reaching an agreement, which serves his strategy of buying time and prolonging the aggression,” the statement said.

After communication with the mediators, Hamas said it became clear that “Israeli” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “once again continuing to obstruct the path to an agreement, imposing new conditions and demands aimed at sabotaging the mediators' efforts and prolonging the war.”

The new ceasefire proposal put forward “aligns with Netanyahu's conditions, particularly his rejection of a permanent ceasefire, his refusal to fully withdraw from the Gaza Strip, and his insistence on maintaining control over the Netzarim Junction, Rafah Crossing, and the Philadelphi Corridor.”

Netanyahu has also introduced new conditions regarding the prisoner exchange issue and has reneged on other points, thereby preventing the completion of the exchange deal – per the statement.

Hamas held “Netanyahu fully responsible for the failure of the mediators' efforts and for obstructing the agreement, as well as for the lives of his prisoners.”

The movement reaffirmed its commitment to the proposal agreed upon on July 2, based on US President Biden’s announcement and the UNSC resolution – it also called upon the mediators to take responsibility and compel the occupation to implement what was agreed upon.
