Local unemployment rate falls to 21.4% in Q2 2024

The Department of Statistics (DoS) reported Jordan’s unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2024 at 21.4 percent, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from the same period in 2023 and stable compared to the first quarter of the year.

- Gender disparities -

  • Male unemployment decreased to 18.9 percent, down by 1.1 percentage points from Q2 2023.
  • Female unemployment rose to 31.0 percent, up by 0.1 percentage points from the previous year. Compared to the first quarter, male unemployment increased by 1.5 percentage points, while female unemployment decreased by 3.7 percentage points.

- Unemployment statistics -

  • Unemployment among university graduates was 25.0 percent, higher than other educational levels.
  • By governorate, Balqa had the highest unemployment rate at 24.5 percent, while Aqaba had the lowest at 17.6 percent.

- Economic participation -

  • The labor force participation rate was 33.9 percent, up by 0.9 percentage points from Q2 2023.
  • Participation rates increased to 53.6 percent for males and 13.9 percent for females.

- Labor market features -

  • 59.5 percent of employed males and 57.6 percent of employed females were in the 20-39 age group.
  • Female workers comprised 22 percent of the public sector workforce.
