Fans of the popular Algerian hazelnut spread, El Mordjene, are expressing their discontent on social media after the European Union (EU) announced a ban on its sale, Middle East Eye (MEE) reported.

Produced by the Cebon company, the spread quickly gained a following in France, where its creamy texture and flavor reminiscent of Nutella captured the hearts of food enthusiasts.

In recent weeks, El Mordjene had become a viral hit, with social media influencers promoting it as a superior alternative to Nutella.

Consumers flocked to local shops, leading to shortages as they sought to indulge in the spread that had taken the culinary scene by storm.

However, the excitement came to an abrupt halt when the French Ministry of Agriculture declared the ban, citing violations of food safety regulations.

The core issue is that Algeria is not among the approved countries for exporting dairy products to the EU, which means El Mordjene cannot legally enter the market.

An investigation is currently underway to determine how the product was initially available in French stores.

Reports reveal that several shipments of El Mordjene have been blocked at the port of Marseille, further exacerbating the situation for eager fans.
