The Ifta Council for Research and Islamic Studies in Jordan issued its final decision on the referendum on the permissibility of gender equality in inheritance.

The Council decided in its resolution No. 268 (22/2018) that the ruling on the settlement of inheritance between male and female is absolute and according to Shari'a.

The Council, which includes a number of Muslim scholars in Jordan and is headed by the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom, Dr. Mohammed al-Khalayleh, stressed that this is an obligatory religious duty, hence it is obligatory and necessary, and that there is no room for judging upon the matter or having opinions about it.

The Islamic scholars also based their decision on the male’s financial burden and obligations such as dowry, and that even if the wife is rich she is not obliged to spend on her husband. The counctil said that in order for the man to face financial burdens, the male share is twice the share of the female.
