A Houston grand jury announced that US rapper Travis Scott will not be charged with any criminal offenses in connection with the tragic incident that occurred during his Astroworld Music Festival concert in 2021.

The incident, which took place at Houston's NRG Park, saw a crowd of approximately 50,000 concertgoers pushing towards the stage during Scott's performance, resulting in chaos and the unfortunate deaths of 10 individuals, including a nine-year-old. Many others were injured as people fainted and were trampled due to the lack of air and space.

Organizers faced criticism for their delayed response to the cries for help, waiting several minutes before halting the music and evacuating the area.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said: “It is tragic that 10 innocent people were killed while trying to enjoy an evening of music and entertainment,” adding, “... but a tragedy isn’t always a crime, and not every death is a homicide.”

“No criminal charges will be filed in the incident.”

While criminal proceedings have been cleared for Travis Scott, multiple lawsuits have been filed against the festival organizers, alleging their failure to ensure the safety of concertgoers. The ruling solely pertains to criminal charges, allowing civil lawsuits to proceed.
