Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan conducted an official visit to Cairo on Wednesday for the first time in over 10 years to meet with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah Sisi.

The visit aims to revitalize cooperation between Ankara and Cairo in light of significant challenges posed by regional changes.

Earlier, the gap between Turkey and Egypt narrowed through a series of official meetings bringing together ministers from both countries, along with others at the presidential level on the sidelines of international conferences and events.

Major issues under discussion between the Turkish and Egyptian presidents include the situation in Gaza, which appears to hold the most significant regional importance for both countries.

This comes amid a recent convergence between Ankara and Cairo regarding the situation in Libya, evidenced by Turkey's steps such as reopening its consulate in Benghazi.

"The significance [of this visit] is that the conditions for normalization that have been ongoing since the beginning of 2020 between Turkey and Egypt and other Arab countries have fully matured. If we consider only the bilateral relationship, both countries aspire to increase bilateral trade to more than $10 billion," said Ercan Gürses, a Turkish writer and political analyst.

Earlier Monday, the Turkish presidency stated that the meeting will discuss steps that can be taken to improve the Türkiye-Egypt relations and revitalize high-level bilateral cooperation mechanisms.

In addition to the bilateral relations, views on current global and regional matters, particularly the “Israeli” attacks on Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, will be exchanged during the talks, it added.
