Japan canceled hundreds of flights and train services during the peak of a major holiday week as Typhoon Ampil approaches the Japanese archipelago.

According to Kyodo News, following days of heavy rain from Tropical Storm Maria, Typhoon Ambil is expected to hit the Tokyo area, home to approximately 40 million people, late Thursday.

The typhoon will then move over the Pacific coast on Friday and Saturday.

All Nippon Airways canceled nearly 280 domestic flights scheduled for Friday, affecting the plans of over 60,000 passengers. Japan Airlines also canceled 191 domestic flights and 26 international flights, impacting 38,600 travelers.

In addition, significant portions of the bullet train network (high-speed railway lines), including between Tokyo and Nagoya, are set to be canceled on Friday.
