The semi-official Iranian news agency "Fars" has released the final investigation results on the helicopter crash that led to the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in May.

On Wednesday, the agency reported, citing an informed source, that the cause of the crash was "poor weather conditions and the helicopter's inability to handle the weight on board."

The Fars News Agency is a news agency in Iran managed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Previously on May 20, Tehran announced that the crash resulted in the deaths of President Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and several other officials. The helicopter carrying them crashed in East Azerbaijan Province, northwest Iran.

State television reported that both Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian were among those killed. The helicopter went down in a rugged mountainous area amid harsh weather conditions while returning from a joint visit by Raisi and his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev. The two were participating in the inauguration of a shared dam on a border river between the two countries.

The announcement of the 63-year-old Iranian president's death, along with his entourage, followed a complex search operation under dense fog and strong winds.

Ebrahim Raisi was elected President of Iran in 2021, succeeding Hassan Rouhani. After his death, Masoud Pezeshkian was elected as his successor.
