Authorities in Hamburg announced on Thursday that Germany has ordered Mohammad Hadi Mofateh, the recently banned head of the Islamic Center in Hamburg, to leave the country within two weeks.

A statement from Hamburg's Interior Ministry revealed that Mofateh was informed that he must depart Germany by Sept. 11, or he will face deportation.

Mofateh has led the Islamic Center in Hamburg since the summer of 2018. Until recently, he was considered an official representative of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in Germany, according to the local intelligence agency in Hamburg.

Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior noted that the Islamic Center’s social media accounts and website were shut down following the July ban of the center and its affiliated organizations due to their pursuit of "extremist objectives."

German media outlets, including the Bild newspaper and NDR radio, reported that the expulsion order was issued against Mofateh. In response to the closure of the center, one of Germany's oldest mosques, known for its turquoise façade, Iran summoned the German ambassador in Tehran. The center had been seen as a representative of Khamenei and a promoter of the Islamic Revolution in Germany.
