Saturday, award-winning musician Elton John concluded his farewell tour in Stockholm, Sweden, retiring from the road after 50 years.

At his last concert, John performed one of his biggest hits, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” The concert had one of the biggest crowds in the festival’s history, and millions of British fans watched the final show live on TV.

John told millions of fans that they would remain in his “head, heart, and soul.”

Over the course of his career, the 76-year-old British singer has won five Grammy awards and performed 4,600 times.

“It’s been my lifeblood to play for you guys, and you’ve been absolutely magnificent,” he told the audience.

John paid tribute to his band and crew, some of whom have accompanied him on tours for many years. “They’re really incredible,” he said. “They are the best, I tell you, the best.”

John began his show in the Swedish Tele2 Arena with Bennie and the Jets, who performed hits like Philadelphia Freedom, Tiny Dancer, Rocket Man, and Candle in the Wind. The show included a video message from Coldplay, who were performing in Sweden at the same time.

“From all the bands and artists you’ve helped and inspired, we love you so much,” Coldplay singer and songwriter Chris Martin told John.

“We are so grateful for everything you’ve done for the Aids Foundation — anytime you’ve been kind to anybody,” Martin said. John has been praised for his work with the Aids foundation and for supporting the LGBT community.

John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour began in North America in 2018 and spanned the globe. It was originally planned to end in 2021, but it was postponed due to the pandemic. John played to over six million fans at over 300 shows and headlined England’s Glastonbury Festival last month.

The tour is one of the highest-grossing; it was the first to make $900 million in ticket sales, according to Billboard magazine.

In the grand finale of his years-long tour, John reflected on his career, telling the audience about his “52 years of pure joy playing music.”

John confirmed that he would never tour again, but he may perform in a “one-off” show in the future.

“What a journey this tour has been and now we find ourselves at the end of it,” John posted to his Instagram page. “Tonight is the final night.”

“I want to appreciate my family, my sons, my husband, everything. I’ve earned it,” John said.

The concert lasted over two hours. John dedicated “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” to his band, crew, and family.

When asked what he would do once he completed his final tour, John said he would continue working on new music.
