Vietnam has banned the release of the “Barbie” movie — an upcoming film featuring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and Will Ferrell, among other stars — due to a map of disputed Chinese territory appearing in the movie.

A scene in “Barbie” includes a map with the nine-dash line marked, a dotted line that shows territory in the South China Sea that both China and Vietnam claim as their own.

The international tribunal at The Hague ruled in 2016 that China does not have a legal basis for its claims to the South China Sea, but the Chinese coast guard has controlled the waters for years. Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines reject China’s claim to the sea.

Vietnam said Monday that it would not allow the release of “Barbie” because of the use of the map.

Vi Kien Thanh, the head of the Vietnam Cinema Department, announced the decision. The decision was made by National Film Appraisal and Classification Board, which licenses and censors foreign movies in Vietnam.

“Barbie” was banned due to “the illegal image of the ‘cow’s tongue line’ in the film,” Thanh said on Monday, using a common Vietnamese phrase for the nine-dash line.

According to Vietnam Express and other publications, posters publicizing the release of “Barbie” were removed from the websites of movie distributors.

The “Barbie” movie, directed by Greta Gerwig and portraying a comedic “perfect” world, was supposed to open on July 21 in Vietnamese theaters.

In 2019, Vietnam ordered the cancellation of showings of “Abominable” after viewers complained about a scene showing the nine-dash line.

Politicians in the Philippines called for a boycott of DreamWorks films in protest of the scene, and Malaysia ordered that the scene be removed from the movie.
